Baviaans Wilderness Route

The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area is the biggest of its kind in the world, offering visitors the ultimate experience in eco-tours and adventure activities in unspoilt mountainous terrain. This world heritage site has a range of camping sites and chalet units for visitors to enjoy during their travel through the area where the selection of fauna and flora is seldom matched anywhere else in the world.

The broader Baviaanskloof area is one of outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity, including seven of South Africa’s eight biomes. Deep valleys are offset against towering peaks, lush riverine forestry against dry Karoo tumble-weed and snow-white beaches alongside clear, bronze waters.

Offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy sunsets, fresh air and silence, the Lilliputian village of Rietbron is central to the farming community that earns its living by producing Mohair. Willowmore is not just a gateway to the Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site, but a town steeped in history. Visit one of the local shebeens, the Bakers Dam, or Aasvoëlberg. You can also visit the tiny settlement of Vondeling, near Willowmore where Optel Crafts has brought unexpected blessings to the 30 families living there.

Steytlerville is well known for its Karoo hospitality, traditional food and a laid-back atmosphere.  Crossing the cultural divide has been a main focus in Steytlerville, and many of the accommodation establishments offer tours that allow visitors to experience the community way of life. The main street has flags featuring local family crests. It has many interesting architectural showpieces including Victorian and Edwardian houses.
