Sunshine Coast Route

The Sunshine Coast route is made up of coastal towns as well as inland areas with a rich history and diverse tourist offering. The heart of the area is found in Port Alfred, home to a spectacular marina and popular small boat harbour. The well-known surfing beach as well as the coral reefs and excellent dive school, draw visitors to this beautiful town each year. Port Alfred is also home to a Royal golf course and excellent restaurants, with the world class St. Francis Health Spa situated just outside of town.

One of the most important chicory producing areas is situated along the Sunshine Coast. Alexandria is a small inland farming town, focused on producing chicory in the area, while the largest active dune fields in the world are around the corner in the Woody Cape. This narrow stretch of indigenous forest bordering the Alexandria dune field is also home to diverse bird life,  offering avid bird watchers a fantastic birding experience. The Alexandria  Hiking Trail begins and ends at the Woody Cape SAN Parks Office..

For those wanting activities with more of an adrenaline rush, Cannon Rocks would be a great place to visit as it’s recognised as a world class kite-surfing area. Boknes is another small holiday hamlet situated  down the beach from Cannon Rocks and is a popular destination among anglers. From Boknes, you can hike to the famous Dias Cross, erected in 1488 and situated in the marine section of the Addo Elephant National Park. Further up the coast in a picture perfect coastal setting, Kenton-on-Sea and Bushmans River are situated between two great rivers and boast the Kariega Blue Flag Beach.  Activities in the area include horse riding along the beautiful sandy beaches, hiking, surf and rock angling, mountain biking, game viewing as well as snorkelling in the beautiful sheltered bays created by the unusual rock formations in the area.

The oldest pub in the country is situated in Bathurst, a fascinating English style 1820 Settler Village showcasing an eclectic mix of old and new. A number of original buildings have been preserved such as the Pig and Whistle in the heart of the village, as well as the oldest pub. Offering great canoeing, birding and horse riding opportunities, the villages of Kleinemonde, Riet River and Rufanes are surrounded by an abundance of rivers and beaches. The fauna of the area including ancient cycas and indigenous vegetation, add to the incredible atmosphere of the area.

As a water sport paradise, Port Elizabeth boasts six Blue Flag beaches along the coast.
