Greater Addo Route

The Addo area is most famous for its citrus farms and the Addo Elephant National Park, incorporating a 120,000ha marine reserve to form the world’s first Big Seven Reserve. The Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo) has been extended through the addition of the Southern Right Whale and Great White Sharks.

Situated along the Sundays River, Colchester is a small river village offering visitors a range of activities including guided walks into the dunefields in Alexandria, taking a boat cruise along the Sunday’s River or a private game drive at Schotia Game Reserve.  Renowned for its citrus trees, rich history and diverse culture, the Sundays River Valley also is home to the Addo Elephant National Park offering visitors the option of exploring the park in your own time, or taking a guided tour with a park ranger.

While travelling through the valley, you can visit the snake and reptile centre at Lenmore or explore the Zuurberg Mountain or an organic lemon farm. The Darlington Lake is silhouetted against the backdrop of the Zuurberg Mountains. Nestled in the shadows of Rietberg, Kirkwood is a vibrant country village with a high diversity of fauna and flora. The town is also the starting point of 4x4 trails and adventure routes, providing adrenaline and adventure enthusiasts with a wide range of activities to choose from. Other activities include a visit to the Xhosa mud houses at Moses Mabida, or a Nkosi Township tour to Machaba soup kitchen. Visitors can also explore the Kabouga Gate section and visit the Daniell Cheetah Farm, as well as the Koffylaagte Game Reserve which boasts an abundance of wildlife with some 20 species of South African antelope, Cape buffalo, giraffe and zebra breeding programmes.
