Born 27 October 1917 in Bazana, Eastern Cape

“The fight for freedom must go on until it is won; until our country is free and happy and peaceful as part of the community of man, we cannot rest.’

As a founding member of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League along with Mandela, Oliver Tambo became the secretary of the party in 1943 following a career as a science and maths teacher.

Tambo became Deputy President of the ANC in 1958, and later signed the first solidarity agreement between the ANC and a Municipality, signalling the start of a relevant strength of the struggle against apartheid. In response to this, Tambo moved abroad to mobilise opposition to apartheid and settled his family in North London where he lived till 1990. 1985 saw Tambo re-elected as President of the ANC, and following 30 years in exile, Tambo returned to South Africa where he passed away in April 1993 due to a stroke.
