The Eastern Cape was formed in 1994 out of the “independent” Xhosa homelands of the Transkei and Ciskei, and is the homeland of Xhosa traditions. A gradual migration took place during the 17th century which led thousands of people from southern Zaire down to Africa. The Xhosa is the most southern group of migrations from Central Africa into the southern African areas. Many of the Xhosa-speaking people today have adopted western culture, however those still living within the rural areas are bound by traditions and lifestyle set out by their ancestors. The Xhosa people are known for their magnificent beadwork and their recognition of the presence and power of ancestral spirits and a supreme authority.
